SPRINGDALE, Ark. — 5NEWS, the #1 source for news and weather in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley, has named Skot Covert Chief Meteorologist. He is being promoted to his new position at 5NEWS from TEGNA sister station THV11 in Little Rock, where he has served as the morning meteorologist since 2020.

Skot is a lifelong Arkansan who grew up in Ozark. From an early age, he was fascinated by weather. Anytime storms rolled in, he was glued to 5NEWS severe weather coverage and also job shadowed at 5NEWS during high school and college.

“I've dreamed of working at 5NEWS since I was a young kid,” Covert said. “This station has played a huge role in my life over the years, and I'm honored to now be a part of its legacy. I can't wait to come home and track storms where my passion for weather began.”

Skot has won three Emmy Awards for his reporting on Arkansas climate issues. As an FAA licensed drone pilot, he can’t wait to capture the beauty of our area from SKY5.

“Skot’s skill and passion for weather coverage is contagious, as is his love of this area,” said 5NEWS General Manager Van Comer. “He understands the importance of giving back and demonstrates a selfless commitment to community service. Skot is the ideal addition to an already strong 5NEWS team.”

Skot is a proud graduate of Arkansas Tech University and Mississippi State University. Prior to joining TEGNA, he provided remote weather forecasts for various locations around the United States and even had the rare opportunity to fly directly into the eye of Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 storm, in 2019.

Skot and his family of Golden Retrievers will relocate to Northwest Arkansas in April. His first appearance on 5NEWS is scheduled for Monday, April 29 at 4 p.m. You can catch his forecasts weeknights on 5NEWS at 5, 6 and 10 and anytime on 5newsonline.com, the 5NEWS mobile app and streaming on 5+ available on Roku, FireTV and Apple TV.

Connect with Skot on Facebook, Instagram, and X.
