The Art of Shopping Local – Art on the Bricks Promotes Shop NWA

Published Tuesday, November 30, 2021

The December 9 Art on the Bricks Art Walk provides a special showcase of art, crafts, and music by regional artists as well as open house receptions in locally owned businesses. More than a dozen art galleries and pop-up art exhibits are scheduled from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of every month. The expanded shopping hours in December offer an opportunity to shop for the holidays while supporting local businesses and creative individuals.

The holiday season can be critical for local businesses. A recent survey by American Express found 78% of small business owners believed 2021 holiday sales will likely determine whether their businesses survive into next year. Arts and culture-related industries, also known as “creative industries,” provide direct economic benefits to the local economy. They enhance quality of life, create jobs, attract new investments, and generate local tax revenue. Patrons of the monthly art walk are invited to support local businesses that sell locally made art, crafts, and other locally produced products all year long. This is especially important during the holiday shopping season. When shoppers support Downtown Rogers businesses, their purchases support the local arts and culture that enhances quality of life, creates jobs, attracts additional investments, and stimulates local economies.

“When you Shop NWA, you help create jobs for your friends and neighbors, contribute to improved public infrastructure and invest in your community both socially and economically,” explains Karen Wagaman, vice president of downtown development for the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. “Dollars spent with local businesses generate state and local tax revenue to fix roads, build parks, support schools, retain jobs, and keep a higher percentage of dollars in the local economy,” she continued.

After more than 18 months enduring the pandemic, the arts and cultural industries remain among the hardest hit by the economic crises inflicted by COVID-19. As our community returns to live and in person events, the opportunity to help revive the creative economy is made possible through events like Art on the Bricks Art Walk and supporting local businesses that sell locally produced art and crafts. Many local businesses do not have e-commerce platforms, so the holiday shopping season provides a chance for them to recoup the losses incurred when people switched to online shopping.
