RLC’s Spotlight Series is designed to bring the right people together at the right time to spark innovation, inspire ideas and align our community around common goals.

  • Each quarter we feature a different theme to spotlight progress and illuminate issues that are opportunities for growing business, activating high-impact leaders, and building a strong and diverse place to visit, live, invest, work and play.

The Road to Affordability

How it all started: Over the past decade, the region skyrocketed into national rankings, recognized for its job growth and high standards of living. That success creates new challenges that threaten to undermine the region’s affordable quality of life.

  • Housing prices across Northwest Arkansas are rising due to the booming population, elevated construction costs, high financing costs and underproduction of homes.
  • Teachers, nurses, firefighters, and other essential workers face increasing obstacles finding affordable housing within the central corridor and near the region’s top amenities. The barriers often prevent people from living in and contributing to the richness of these communities.

In our sites: Founded in 2021, Groundwork’s mission is to provide strategic regional leadership, expertise and resources to strengthen communities by expanding housing for working families near employment, commercial and cultural centers in Northwest Arkansas.

Why it matters: New affordable housing developments are starting to be constructed to help address the affordability issue.

  • Businesses both large and small are having issues recruiting and retaining talent due to housing affordability.
  • Groundwork has spent time researching the problem and discovering solutions to help keep our community and businesses growing and thriving.

About the speaker: As executive director of Groundwork, Duke McLarty works with community partners across sectors to address housing affordability in the region. Duke is passionate about working collaboratively to develop workable solutions the fit the unique needs of each city. The goal of the center is to promote well-designed housing options and mixed-income, walkable and transit-accessible neighborhoods for the region’s workers and their families.

Come learn about short and long-term solutions to keep NWA the ideal place to visit, live, work, play, and invest!
