Visual artist Roxy Erickson is currently based in Northwest Arkansas. Her artistic journey began during her high school years in New Delhi, India, where she first developed a passion for painting. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012 and went on to complete her Master of Fine Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2015. In 2016, Erickson returned to the Northwest Arkansas area, where she has since focused on building her career as a solo artist.

Erickson is the featured artist during this Thursday’s Art on the Bricks Art Walk. The public is invited to meet the artist and explore her work during a special artist reception and exhibition at 215 N 3rd St. in Rogers, Arkansas, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Her current body of work delves into the disorienting and dissociative experiences that can follow trauma, such as assault or abuse. These haunting sensations, both conscious and subconscious, can leave individuals feeling fragmented, unsure of their sense of self, or as if they are fading from their own narrative.

“As I can only speak to my own personal experience,” says Erickson, “I choose to primarily paint female identifying models to tell the story of different events throughout my life, while hoping to invoke a shared emotional understanding with my audience.”

The visual language of her work is striking—bright, saturated colors and shiny materials lure viewers in, only to leave them with an unsettling emotional undertone. The initial sense of joy becomes shadowed by subtle melancholia. “The women in my paintings are controlling the gaze of the viewer by looking away or directly back at them,” Erickson explains.

Through the use of traditionally feminine motifs—florals, pink hues, and other gendered elements—her work calls attention to the female gaze. It tells stories through a woman’s perspective while simultaneously reflecting on the societal gaze imposed upon women. This duality offers a layered commentary on consent and the complexities of identity and presence.

Erickson’s paintings are created using a mix of acrylic and oil paint on canvas, with select pieces incorporating mixed media such as metallic papers, mylar, sequins, glitter, and plastic flowers.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience her powerful work in person and meet the artist behind it this Thursday in Downtown Rogers.
