New Tech HS Marketing at Flashback Pizza

Last week the Rogers Lowell Chamber worked with high school instructor William Felts to facilitate a tour of Downtown Rogers.

Students from Rogers New Technology High School had the opportunity to engage with Downtown Rogers business owners, kicking off their annual "Marketing Plan" project. This field trip, an annual event for the marketing class, provided students with direct insights from local entrepreneurs.

At Flashback Pizza, students immersed themselves in a unique, nostalgic atmosphere filled with 1980s memorabilia and free vintage arcade games. Owner Dustin Simmons shared the story behind the restaurant, explaining how his past roles in various food businesses and partnerships influenced the creation of Flashback Pizza, a family-friendly spot that blends quality food with engaging, retro experiences.

Simmons emphasized the impact of unique branding and creative marketing in building a successful business. His approach has fostered a strong social media following of over 10,000, helping to create a loyal customer base. By combining a memorable atmosphere with interactive elements and thoughtful branding, Simmons demonstrated how a distinctive identity can drive a small business’s growth and community appeal.

Hector Amaya, from The Bird’s Nest art gallery, shared his journey of running a custom art business and emphasized how essential self-branding is for small business success. His gallery showcases a mix of functional and visual art, including custom laser-cut items created through his own designs or through collaborations with other artists. Amaya collaborates with various businesses, offering branded merchandise and in-store marketing items that elevate both his and his partners' visibility.

A distinctive feature of The Bird’s Nest is its interactive approach: it offers in-store crafting events where families can create art together, fostering community engagement and creative expression. Amaya also participates in the Rogers Local Food & Art Market, allowing him to reach a broader audience and grow his brand by working with other local businesses.

Speaking to students, Amaya encouraged them to recognize the value of their high school experiences in shaping future success, highlighting the importance of interpersonal skills and respect. "The skills you learn in high school, meeting and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds, teach you how to treat people," he said. He emphasized surrounding oneself with driven, positive individuals, noting, "People are always watching, so it’s important to be around good people." His words offered an inspiring perspective on building a business that reflects personal values and community impact.

Students posed questions about marketing tactics, customer targeting, and Downtown Rogers's supportive community for local businesses. Both entrepreneurs emphasized the benefits of Downtown Rogers, including walkability, a supportive chamber of commerce, and a collaborative business community, as critical factors in their decision to establish businesses there.

Following their discussions, students explored the area, assessing various businesses' branding and visual marketing approaches. They also learned from Karen Wagaman, vice president for downtown development, who highlighted key attractions that contribute to Downtown Rogers’ appeal, such as historic buildings, the Railyard Bike Park, and the "third spaces" that foster community connection. Investments in infrastructure and an influx of multifamily housing are expected to further enhance Downtown Rogers' appeal and support continued economic growth.

This immersive experience left students with valuable real-world insights into small business operation, branding, and the economic benefits of a vibrant downtown community, preparing them to launch their own marketing projects.
