Sourdough Passion Fuels Community Change

Posted by: Karen Wagaman on Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Big Heart Bread is a home-based, benevolent bakery in Rogers. Founder and baker, Laurie Anderson, bakes Artisanal sourdough breads, and donates the proceeds to organizations that serve children in the community. Baking and giving away bread began as a hobby during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Quickly her passion for sourdough baking blossomed into a thriving endeavor with a heartwarming mission. Positive feedback from friends and family ignited her entrepreneurial spirit, leading her to channel her love for baking into something greater. She discovered she could use the proceeds to help others in the community. Through word of mouth and social media, coworkers, friends and neighbors responded with moral support and more and more orders.

She established her enterprise as a non-profit organization, using the proceeds from her bread sales to support local organizations that serve children. By combining her culinary talents with a purpose-driven approach to serve the community, Laurie has not only created delicious bread but also become a catalyst for positive change.

The decision to open her first brick and mortar location is a product of the growing demand for Laurie's artisanal loaves and the expanding impact of her philanthropic efforts. Later this year she is opening a commercial bakery at 103 W Chestnut, next to Nola's Pantry. This strategic move will allow her to respond to demand for her bread and share her knowledge through teaching classes.

In the meantime, you can find her sourdough loaves at Nola's Pantry Thursday through Saturday (or whenever they run out) and she will continue to offer her baked goods at the Rogers Local Food and Art Market. These and other opportunities to sell her products allow her to continue to contribute to her community while preparing for the exciting transition ahead.

Laurie's story exemplifies the transformative power of pursuing one's passions with purpose and the profound impact that small businesses can have on their local communities. It's heartening to see individuals like Laurie making a difference through their entrepreneurial endeavors, enriching lives one loaf of bread at a time.
