Keep America Beautiful celebrates America Recycles Day the week after the Art Walk, so we are getting a jump on it! November 15 is a holiday dedicated to spreading the word about the importance of recycling and making sure everyone knows what can and can not be recycled.

Tom Flynn's Found Metal Sculptures are found at Rogers Experimental House and throughout NWA.

  • America Recycles Day 2023 has chosen the theme, "Creative Innovation" to encourage people to think out of the box and find new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.
  • In line with the Creative Innovation theme, we are taking trash to treasure with upcycled art during the November Art on the Brick Art Walk.
  • See how area artists are focusing on making the world a better place to live in for all the generations to come.

The Transformation from Architect to Artist: When Eloa Jane Pereira started her artistic career, she was meeting new people and learning a new language in an unfamiliar country. Finances were tight so she looked to the most affordable and abundant resources at her disposal—junk mail.

·         The prospect of redirecting trash from landfills appealed to her concern for the environment.
·         The variety of colors, patterns, and textures of the papers appealed to her artistic sensibilities.
·         The upcycling of materials deemed worthless by most, and transformed into something valuable resonated with Pereira’s own journey of reinvention and renewal.

The Artist’s Origin Story: Pereira was born the second youngest of nine siblings in the small town of Caratinga in Brazil. She excelled in both art and music at a young age, creating paintings and sculptures and traveling with a female quartet during the height of the Bossa Nova days. Her artistic talents and passion for mathematics led her to acquiring a degree in architecture and served in that profession in Brazil for 25 years.
Despite the apparent success in her career, things were never easy in Brazil. Weary from the economic obstacles, she decided to start fresh in the United States and moved here in 2005 working to rebuild a life for herself and her children, moving to several states before finding her place in Northwest Arkansas.

Today, her incredibly intricate art has found its way to exhibitions in multiple galleries and collections around the world including exhibitions in Brooklyn, New York and Paris, France. Her tapestries, reliefs, and sculptures continue to be formed using office paper, magazines, newspapers, and phone books. “I carefully sort through the material available to create a color palette,” she explained. “Then, I roll, coil, and weave to form different textures, shapes, and varying levels of relief,” she continued. The result is a series of works of art that showcase not only technique but also meaningful personal experiences.
