Ten years ago electric cars were few, far between, and considered niche. Last year over 10 million were sold, your neighbor probably owns one, and you can’t go anywhere without seeing a Tesla. What is behind the big push, and why would anyone buy a vehicle that you can’t ‘fill up’ at the gas station?
Here are Five Reasons people are making the switch:
1. Environmental Benefits: EVs emit significantly fewer greenhouse gasses and other pollutants per mile versus traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles making them better for the environment. This benefit is realized even when the electricity is sourced from ‘dirty’ sources like coal.
In a traditional car, only 40% of the money you put into the gasoline ever goes towards propelling you down the road. The other 60% is lost through the driveline, idling, and other inefficiencies like imperfect combustion. EVs are highly efficient, and typically 85-90% of the energy that is put into the battery is converted to moving you down the road. Most EV drivers save over $1,000 per year on fueling costs.
2. Lower Operating Costs: While EV drivers have the advantage of saving on fueling costs, additional benefits are also realized because EVs have fewer moving parts overall than ICEs. This means cheaper and less frequent maintenance (no more oil changes!).
3. Better Performance: EVs often offer better acceleration and handling than ICE vehicles, making them more fun to drive. They are also quieter and smoother, providing a more comfortable ride.
4. Increasing Availability: Electric vehicle technology has improved dramatically in recent years, making EVs more widely available and affordable. As a result, more people are considering buying an EV as their primary mode of transportation.
5. Government Incentives: Through bipartisan legislation, the $7,500 Electric Vehicle tax credit has been renewed, and extended. Additional incentives are also offered toward the purchase of and installation of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment, or ‘chargers’ as you might more commonly hear.
