Workforce Development | Extended Learning Programs Expanding to Help Students be “Work-Ready”

Posted by: Justin Freeman on Tuesday, November 9, 2021

Extended Learning Programs offered in Rogers Public Schools will be expanded during the 2021-2022 school year with funding awarded by an Arkansas American Rescue Plan (ARP) ESSER III grant.  All 9th-12th grade students will have opportunities to participate in extended learning programs designed to increase awareness of career options and the academic, technical and employability skills that align with different types of jobs within a broad spectrum of career fields.

What is “Work-Ready”?
One of the goals of the Extended Learning Programs is increasing the number of students who will be equipped with knowledge and technical skills needed within their chosen career field to be “work-ready”
for future jobs and career opportunities following high school graduation.

The Extended Learning Programs offer students opportunities to participate in and obtain essential career readiness skills, technical skills training, industry recognized certifications and post-secondary credentials that will contribute to a successful transition to college and/or the workplace following high school graduation. A flexible scheduling framework with program options during the school day, after school and during the summer months also help ensure accessibility for all students.

Local Partnerships a Key Component of Success
Collaborative partnerships with local companies, workforce development entities and post-secondary institutions will be an essential part of the initiative.  The programs will provide avenues for companies to introduce students to career opportunities within the region, including opportunities to acquire specific skill sets that align with entry level positions across a broad spectrum of industry sectors.

Extended learning programs will be offered in various learning environments including on-site at district campuses, on-line courses, technical skills training, and certification programs offered by local industry and medical training facilities.  Students will also have opportunities to attend post-secondary courses, training and certification programs offered by Northwest Community College during the regular school year and summer months.

The programs also provide an opportunity to build capacity and partnerships with local business and industries to develop a collaborative program designed to insure a pipeline of skilled workers that will be needed to meet current and projected workforce demands within the local community and region.
