NWA Emerging Leaders Education Workshop Presents: Adventures in Team Leadership

On October 8, the Education Workgroup will be hosting a one-day seminar, “Adventures in Team Leadership,” at the Jones Center in Springdale. The event will last from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with lunch provided. The morning session will include a personality profile assessment, lessons on team building with purpose in the workplace, and an introduction to creating high performance teams that can move your business forward. The afternoon session will be on the ropes course for challenges at the Team Adventure Center to learn how to overcome team dysfunctions and create best practices for the workplace. In total, this program will provide a better understanding of yourself and how you work in a team environment, provide important information on how best to interact with others, help you identify the best methods for team building in your company to achieve performance results, and shape your career outlook in new ways. The best part about this event is it provides a FUN opportunity for professional development! Please join us on Friday, Oct. 8 for this team leadership experience. The cost to attend is $100. Candidate Forums

The Political and Government Affairs Workgroup encourages members to be informed voters. If you live in Rogers or Lowell, the Chamber invites you to get to know the candidates before heading to the polls. The government affairs division of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting three candidate forums, which are designed to provide Chamber members the opportunity to learn more about the candidates. A moderator will ask questions about the candidate's positions on issues affecting our community. The candidate forums are presented by Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport and Embassy Suites Northwest Arkansas. Mark your calendars for these dates:

Monday, Sept. 27 - City of Rogers mayoral race, Embassy Suites in Rogers, 6 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 30 - City of Lowell Mayoral and alderman races, Lowell City Hall, 6 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 14 - City of Rogers alderman races, Rogers City Hall, 6 p.m.

Siloam Springs will host a “Candidate Reception” for the candidates for Siloam City Board of Directors on Oct. 12. It will be from 6:30-8 p.m. at the community room of Arvest Bank at the intersection of Hwy 412 and Holly Streets. It will not be a “forum or debate”, but simply a “meet and greet” event and is open to the public.

The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce is hosting a forum for city council candidates on Friday, Sept. 24 at noon in the Chamber offices located at 123 West Mountain Street. For more information call 479-521-1710.

There are a few contested city council races in Springdale, but there are not any debates currently scheduled.

For members living in Bentonville and Bella Vista there are no contested local races.

DOWNTOWN ROGERS

The Downtown Rogers Workgroup will be voting on new leadership in October. If you are interested in serving as Chair, Vice-Chair or Secretary for this exciting workgroup please contact amber@ambersavage.com for more information. The Rogers Farmers’ Market steering committee will be taking a break for September and October. Meetings will resume Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Iron Horse Coffee Co. and will meet periodically from November to March to prepare for the upcoming 2011 market season.

GREEN TEAM

The NWAEL Green Team Workgroup, in partnership with Rogers Community School Recreation Association, is obtaining bicycles for adults and children to create a "check out" system for families and individuals to use on the Rogers Trail System or around the Rogers Activity Center (RAC) area. A total of 70 bikes will be available to the public through the RAC programs. A second project within the "Bike Program" will be working with the City of Rogers Parks Department placing bike racks and "recycled" bikes for public use at specified trail heads throughout Rogers initially and then hopefully throughout Northwest Arkansas's various cities as the program grows.

CALL TO ACTION: Fellow Emerging Leaders, if you have a working bicycle for an adult 12 to 50 years of age, please contact Clint Hopper at clint.hopper@craftontullsparks.com for additional information. We will be collecting 30 bikes for individuals as a pilot to get this program running. If you are a bike enthusiast or know someone who is, please contact us if you would like to help repair these used bikes on a Saturday and/or volunteer to help teach a bike maintenance class for citizens of Northwest Arkansas.

After organizing and hosting the NWA Emerging Leader’s politically-themed program in August, the Political and Government Affairs workgroup has shifted its focus to the upcoming November general election. Future workgroup events could include hosting candidate debates and forums that outline the issues facing voters this fall. Remember – the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 2 general election is Oct. 3. If you need to check your voting status, locate your polling place, or learn more about the candidates running for office, please visit the PGA website at: www.nwalead.com/political. If you have any interest in politics or government, then get involved and come to one of our monthly meetings. We typically meet the second Tuesday of each month during lunch at the Lowell office of the Rogers-Lowell Chamber of Commerce.

Please join the Education Workgroup for the September Program featuring nationally recognized, generational employee expert, Judith Tavano. Judith is a professor of Human Resources with the University of Arkansas and has completed extensive research and been published on this issue. Judith has an exciting presentation that is relevant to anyone who is hiring, retaining, or developing employees from Generation Y! This is a can’t-miss opportunity, and best of all, its free of charge! The event is a brown bag seminar on Sept. 24 at the U of A Global Campus in Rogers from 11:30-1:00. The Sustainability Workgroup would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with the recycling effort at the LPGA this year. Due to all of our hard work, we were able to recycle two full dump trucks full of sorted, recycled materials and three full trailers of cardboard. Roll-off Services only took one dumpster of trash for the entire tournament. Please join us for our next meeting Tuesday, Sept. 21 from 7–8 a.m. at CCF Brands, 5509 Walsh Ave., Rogers..
