Lowell "Shines" as Keep Arkansas Beautiful Award Winner
LOWELL (Oct. 28, 2008) – The City of Lowell is one of six statewide recipients of the first Arkansas Shine Awards from the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission (KAB). KAB representatives presented the award to city officials at a reception yesterday at Brenda’s Kitchen. The Arkansas Shine Awards program recognizes communities that are making significant strides in providing programs and instituting policies to create sustainable communities.
Parks and community beautification top the list of priorities for improving Lowell’s environmental quality of life, according to the City’s awards entry. “The best example of what is important to our community is our newest park – Ward Nail Park,” wrote Michael Solomon, director of planning and economic development for the City of Lowell. Ward Nail Park is a 35-acre greenspace that features a BMX bike track, butterfly garden, bird and bat houses, walking trails, picnic spaces, playground and stocked fishing pond.
Lowell’s commitment to beautification is shared with many local industries, including J.B. Hunt Transport, one of the world’s largest trucking companies. In an effort to beautify the roadways that its trucks ply everyday, J.B. Hunt Transport purchased and installed original Lee Littlefield sculptures along Interstate 540. Other beautification projects in Lowell include the installation of flowerbeds at the Lowell Museum by the Kiwanis Club, an Arbor Day tree-planting at the local schools and Lowell’s designation as a Tree City USA.
