About the NWA Emerging Leaders Political and Government Affairs Workgroup
The NWAEL Political and Government Affairs Workgroup is a non-partisan program intended to assess current political issues and opportunities; educate on political and government processes and engage and encourage participation in local, state and federal government.

Voter Registration
Registering to vote is more convenient than ever! Click on the “Register to Vote” button on the side of this page or pick up a paper registration application at your county clerk’s, state revenue office, or library.
Do not wait! You must register to vote by April 18th to be eligible to vote in the May 18th primary election. The voter registration deadline for the November general election is October 3. For additional information, follow the links below.

Benton and Washington County are in the Third Congressional District and elect a representative to the United States House of Representatives in even-numbered years for a two year term. Description of Elected Positions
- City Council - Members of a city council are charged with overseeing the operation of city government including review and approval of an annual budget. Candidates for city office must be at least 18 years old, a current resident of the city and ward they will represent, a U.S. citizen, never convicted of embezzlement, bribery, forgery or other infamous crime, and must be a registered voter. - Justice of the Peace - Justices of the Peace serve on the Quorum Court and represent districts within each county. Justices review and approve budgets for the county but do not have day-to-day oversight of departments within the county, including the sheriff’s office, clerk’s, treasurer, and assessor’s office. Candidates for county office must be at least 18 years old, a current resident of the District they will represent, a U.S. citizen, never convicted of embezzlement, bribery, forgery or other infamous crime, and must be a registered voter. - Mayor - A mayor is the chief administrative officer for a town or city. Mayors oversee the day-to-day operation of a city and are responsible for submitting a budget to the city council for review and approval. Candidates for city office must be at least 18 years old, a current resident of the city and ward they will represent, a U.S. citizen, never convicted of embezzlement, bribery, forgery or other infamous crime, and must be a registered voter. - County Judge - A county judge is the chief administrative officer for a county. The Judge oversees day-to-day operations of certain aspects of county government. The Judge does not provide oversight for all departments within county government. For example, the Judge does not have oversight of the sheriff’s, clerk, assessor, or treasurer’s office. Candidates for county judge must be at least 25 years old, a current resident of the District they will represent, a U.S. citizen, never convicted of embezzlement, bribery, forgery or other infamous crime, and must be a registered voter. - State Representative - State representatives are elected to a two-year term and are limited to serving just three terms. State Representatives serve in the Arkansas General Assembly which meets each year to make state laws and approve annual budgets for state government. Candidates for state representatives must be at least 21 years old, a current resident of the District they will represent, a U.S. citizen, never convicted of embezzlement, bribery, forgery or other infamous crime, and must be a registered voter.
